Located in the northwestern corner of the state, Freeport, IL, is known for its surrounding valleys as well as for its proximity to the highest natural point in Illinois. 1. Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Recreation Area
After more than a year of reconstruction works, Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Recreation Area finally reopened its doors to the public in September 2021. Covering a little over 700 acres of territory, this nature reserve was first established in the late 1950s and has since become a top-rated destination not only for fishing but for a broad range of recreational activities and outdoor sports including picnicking, hiking, camping, mountain biking, wildlife photography, and horseback riding.
Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Recreation Area is located about 17 miles northwest of downtown Freeport, making it possible to reach it in a little over 20 minutes by car along route US-20. For anglers, the main attraction of this place is the small lake located in the center of the park, where swimming, boating, and fishing are allowed during the spring and summer months. The lake is regularly stocked with walleye, northern pike, and channel catfish.
2. Wetlands Preserve Park
Located just north Freeport is a beautiful public recreation area that covers a little over 57 acres of territory. A great destination for bird enthusiasts, as it has many migratory nesting sites. This park offers an excellent spot for local anglers looking for the best fishing areas in the Freeport, IL area.
There is plenty of wildflowers, birds, and other wildlife to see, check out the observation deck for breathtaking views. Boating is not allowed at this wetland, but there are plenty of prime fishing spots along the shore. You’ll find plenty of bullhead, northern pike, and carp here. Located along a major highway, Wetlands Preserve Park is a welcome respite from the noise. Stepping in, you’ll find yourself feeling deep within the beautiful nature Northern Illinois has to offer.
3. Apple River Canyon State Park
Located just 30 miles northwest of downtown Freeport, Apple River Canyon State Park is worth the trek and one of the top fishing destinations in the area. As its name indicates, this state park sits along the banks of the Apple River, where anglers can find excellent specimens of smallmouth bass, sunfish, crappie, carp, and suckers. Getting here from the city center takes about 30 minutes by car, following routes US-20 and IL-78 N.
